“Block Vibes”, Jay-Z’s new playlist on TIDAL
Jay-Z’s music production may have slowed down in recent years, but he remains prolific on the playlists front. Since launching TIDAL in 2015, Hov has built countless thematic playlists. This confirms to the artist his ability to make playlists as much as he is at the microphone.
“I have found so many songs, my playlist set is A ++. I challenge everyone… I am definitely on the list of playlist makers. He boasted at a Twitter Spaces conference earlier this year.
JAY-Z has shared this Wednesday 1 st December a new playlist to exclusive TIDAL like to celebrate the renaming of the parent company of the streaming platform, Square, Inc. The playlist of 13 songs is titled “Block Vibes” . It reflects the Roc Nation mogul’s love for underground hip-hop, with tracks from the late MF DOOM, The Alchemist and Vince Staples, Mach-Hommy and Madlib.
There are also some titles from artists outside the continent such as the Nigerian stars Wizkid, Tems and Ladipoe; by the Australian group Hiatus Kaiyote and the British musical collective Sault. Texan trio Khruangbin and rising singer KeiyaA, born in New York and originally from Chicago, round out the program.
As announced, Square, the financial services company co-founded by Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, changes its name to Block. Square bought TIDAL from Jay-Z in a $ 302 million deal last March and cited the acquisition of the streaming platform as a reason for its new name. “The change to Block is a testament to the growth of the business,” Square said in a press release.
In addition to adding to his already billionaire net worth, JAY-Z earned a spot on the Square board of directors as part of the TIDAL sale.
“This partnership will be a game-changer for many,” he said at the time.
