The R. Kelly case leads to legal turmoil for many relatives of the rapper. And it could not be otherwise. Indeed, since the start of the trial, the prosecutor’s office has chosen to focus more on the artist’s inner circle.
Three associates implicated in attempts to intimidate witnesses
Since his incarceration at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago in July 2018, R. Kelly’s relatives have been increasingly in the spotlight. This Wednesday, the singer’s lawyer tweeted “We have just learned of the indictment of several so-called ‘associates’ of R. Kelly”.
These associates are in fact accused of intimidation of witnesses by the judges in charge of the case. These include Richard Arline Jr., Donnell Russell and Michael Williams. All of them intimidated people at risk of testifying at Kell’s trial in different ways.
Thus, according to the report of the prosecutors of the county of Brooklyn, Arline Jr would have tried to obtain the silence of one of the accusers of Robert Sylvester Kelly by offering him the sum of 500,000 dollars.
“Me and another person offered money to Jane Doe so that she does not pursue her complaint or her testimony against Robert Kelly” affirms Arline during her hearing.
Donnell Russell, meanwhile, is known by Brooklyn prosecutors for harassing and intimidating a witness and his mother after a lawsuit was filed against the 2018 performer of the well-known “I Believe I Can Fly .”
For the moment, the sentences of the two defendants have not yet been pronounced. Prosecutors did not want to explain this state of affairs. On the other hand, the third defendant is already fixed on his fate.
Michael Williams, sentenced to 8 years in prison
Michael Williams is the third person to be listened to last Wednesday. This relative of the former King of Pop-Soul publicist is indicted for having burned an SUV in the home of another accuser in Florida.
At 38, Michael Williams admits the charges against him and pleads guilty to arson. He was sentenced to 96 months in jail from the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
R. Kelly’s lawyer denies any connection between Michael Williams and his client
Reacting to the indictment of the three associates of R. Kelly on Wednesday, Steve Greenberg , the singer’s lawyer said “ Without a doubt, Robert Kelly has nothing to do with any of these acts allegedly committed by those charged . He did not attempt to intimidate or encourage anyone to do so. No involvement of any kind. ”
Another Kelly spokesperson asserted , ‘At this point the public has only heard one side of the story in this matter and that is about to change in the coming weeks. We look forward to the truth and facts being revealed as the defense continue to vigorously defend Mr. Kelly. ”
And yet, it should be noted that each of the three associates pleaded guilty. R. Kelly , whose trial has been open since Monday, August 9, 2021, faces life imprisonment. While waiting for the final decision on his conviction, this artist turned criminal intends to appeal …
It will be definitively fixed on its fate in 2022.
