Super Bowl stylist Janet Jackson takes Justin Timberlake to court

Sharing is caring!

Super Bowl 38 was held in Houston, Texas in 2004. Beyoncé sang the national anthem and Janet Jackson, Diddy, Nelly, and Kid Rock took part in the halftime show. Surprise guest Justin Timberlake ended up making the headlines when he ripped part of Janet’s top, exposing her chest on national television for nine sixteenths of a second. Viewers are shocked, Janet’s career takes flight and a media scandal ensues. 20 years later, the situation has changed, and other versions are being heard.

A sex appeal oriented instruction

A new documentary titled Malfunction explores this moment in pop culture and more specifically JT’s role in this incident.

The documentary used old footage mixed with new interviews to try and find out what really happened. It first aired on Hulu on November 19. Although Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake were not involved, many NFL and CBS insiders have shared their thoughts and opinions on the scandal.

Apparently, Salli Frattini, the MTV director in charge of the halftime show, recalled that she insisted the show was filled with sex appeal. Justin was supposed to rip Jackson’s skirt off to reveal the jumpsuit she was wearing underneath (not her top), but the plan was called off at the last minute, according to The Guardian.

Instead, Janet joined Justin for a duet of his song Rock Your Body. And when it came to the lyrics “Gonna have you naked by the end of this song,” Justin tore off Janet Jackson’s bodice to reveal her chest, covered only by a nipple jewel. Janet looked shocked, and the show was abruptly cut short by a commercial.

Afterwards, Janet was (understandably) upset. “Janet ran away – we couldn’t reach her on the phone, nor her manager,” Frattini said. “She should have said, ‘nobody knew, and that was a mistake. She never told us anything. We’re here trying to ask whoever it happened to – because it happened to them – and they were gone. “

CBS chief Les Moonves demanded that Janet and Justin apologize on air. Justin did, but Janet refused. “It sounded like an excessive request for something that was an accident,” said Matt Serletic, then CEO of Jackson’s record label, Virgin Records. “Something that didn’t need to be put entirely on her. And so she didn’t, and good for her. “

Long blamed, Janet’s stylist declines all responsibility

Designer Wayne Scot Lukas , then Janet’s stylist, reflected on the artist’s infamous wardrobe malfunction at the party, and Justin Timberlake’s reaction after the show. He explained that there had been no problem with the wardrobe. In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, he said the outfit did what it was meant to do. “I was hired to do a job. I did exactly what I had to do, ” he explained.

Lukas has worked alongside Janet for decades, so he is fully aware of the logistics, and the design of a wardrobe created for dancers and performers. “My job is to have snaps, pins and velcro so that, even on her quick changes, if she forgets to put something back, it stays in place. It’s my job. I keep my story 100%, I did exactly what I was supposed to do, what I was hired to do, and if I had hurt my friend I wouldn’t have worked with Janet for six years after the Super Bowl, ” he said. “I would have been fired that day.”

Lukas added that Timberlake condemned him during a post-show interview where he judged the situation as a “wardrobe malfunction”.

“He coined that phrase and when he said that I thought, ‘The friendship is over.’ Friendship is over. Wardrobe malfunction? I don’t have a wardrobe problem, ”he said, explaining that he was making $ 10,000 a day at the time. The idea that his design was the reason the performance went awry felt like a slap in the face.

According to Lukas, Justin wanted to steal the show from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Madonna, who caused a sensation by kissing at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards a few months earlier. The former NSYNC member insisted on doing something bigger than their performance. He wanted a revelation ”.

Lukas also recounted that Janet’s outfit was meant to be completely different. “Janet had to wear a Rocha dress, and [Justin] had to walk on the back of her dress to show her butt in a beaded thong ,” he told the outlet. But “the outfit changed a few days before, and you saw the magic”.

Ultimately, Lukas said the blame had to go to one of the producers who were supposed to turn off the performance before Janet’s breast was exposed.
