The news of Virgil Abloh’s untimely death has hit many people hard. In the days that followed, many of his close friends and former colleges celebrated the creator’s eventful life.
The funeral for the founder of Off-White was held at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art last Monday. Some celebrities like Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Kid Cudi and many more were in attendance. Note that during the Louis Vuitton men’s fashion show last week, Virgil’s latest creations toured the stage.
Much of those who attended the parade honored the deceased by attending his funeral. In a clip, rapper Tyler is seen sharing a few words, visibly moved by the death of his friend. He struggled to hold back tears during his eulogy.
” All these different people, of colors, ages, origins, religions, all came for one man and that’s what he did, he brought together the sickest people ,” says there in the clip. “ But you learn that he’s not that bad or that he’s a genius at everything he does. The day after he died, I was going to send him an invitation and I was so excited that he saw her. I was really excited for him to see this for real. “
“ For more than two years, Virgil valiantly fought a rare and aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He has chosen to wage his battle in private since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing many difficult treatments, while also leading several important institutions that span fashion, art and culture. Tyler continued.
He adds, “Through it all, his work ethic, endless curiosity and optimism have never wavered. Virgil was motivated by his dedication to his profession and his mission to open doors to others and to create paths for greater equality in art and design ”. He would often say, “ Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself , deeply believing in the power of art to inspire future generations . “
Edwina Abloh also delivered her moving speech
No one knew Virgil Abloh was battling cancer behind the scenes. After his death, his family explained in part why he decided to keep it a secret. In an Instagram post, Virgil’s family say he just wanted to keep the focus on the scope of his work.
” We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother and friend ,” reads a caption. “ He is survived by his beloved wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Gray Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and many dear friends and colleagues. “
Virgil’s older sister, Edwina Abloh delivered her speech: “ Virgil has inspired multitudes to never give in and to be the best version of themselves,” she said.
She went on to say, “My brother was endearing and humble, but bold and courageous. Her charisma and aura resonated with love and kindness for all. He pursued his passions and remained diligent until the end. He was inspired by her confidence and imagination, as Virgil did not believe in the word impossible. As Virgil once said in his last show: there is no limit. Life is short, you can’t even waste a day of yourself doing what people think you should be doing. “
Other celebrities present at the celebration included Drake , Frank Ocean, Don C and Jerry Lorenzo.
